How It Works
The course is divided into four main parts: the course instruction guide, the core module lessons, the bonus resources, and the community forum — all accessible immediately once you join. Here is a brief overview of each of the four parts.
When you first login to the course, you will be presented with a Welcome Video message from Maria Lorena Lehman. Also, you will receive immediate access to the Course Instruction Guide which will give you step-by-step instructions on how to go through this course. Keep in mind, that while this course is three months long — you can go through it at your own pace, since all of the learning materials are “ready and waiting” for you right now.
This course is structured using 12 Core Module Lessons, where each module covers different ArchiSensing Design topics. To get a full listing of the curriculum taught in these 12 modules, simply click here. Also note that each module comes with an Action Guide, which provides you with actionable steps so you can apply the concepts and lessons that you learn in each module. Also included with each module is an MP3 Audio Lecture Narration, so you can listen to the module lessons as well as read them. (Modules are structured as text with images and diagrams to further explain important concepts.)
This course includes an array of Bonus Resources which range from the ArchiSensing Principles Guide to three Bonus Video Lessons. The main idea with these bonuses is to show you how I carry out my own design process, where I give you tips on how to apply what works so that you can improve yours. Two such video lessons are: Crafting Your Design Concept and Advanced Research Methods. Also, the Case Studies Video Lesson aims to show you ArchiSensing design methods in action as they can be seen in existing built environments. To learn more about all of the Bonus Resources which you will get: simply click here. Keep in mind that all bonuses strategically coordinate with core module lessons, so you will get a well-rounded grasp of all subject materials.
The Design Lab Forum is an online place where you can interact with other ArchiSensing students as well as with the course’s creator, Maria Lorena Lehman. Within the forum, you can collaborate with others, get feedback on your work, and you can ask questions about the course. Really the possibilities are endless — as you will get out of this forum what you put into it. The key is for you to participate, to further discussions on what you learn in course modules, and to keep ideas flowing to grow a thriving ArchiSensing Design Lab Forum Community.

How Can This Course Help You?
You will be able to design buildings that truly make a difference. Imagine that you are a patient in a typical hospital recovering from surgery. You recover in spite of your surrounding environment, not because of it. Colors, textures, machines, layout, compositon, acoustics and so much more are in direct conflict with what you need to recover. Your architecture does not meet your needs — and it hinders the quality and speed of your recovery. The environment looks sterile, but it is not a truly healing environment.
Now, would you want to be the architect that designed this hospital?
…Or the following one?
This other hospital is a joy to recover in. Because of sensory design, it appeals to patients because it caters to their specific needs, based on their particular illness, age, gender, and learning styles. Healing is tailored — where rooms are sensorially, technologically, and compositionally tuned to patients needs, as they need them. This hospital helps the medical staff do their jobs better too, all while becoming an active participant in helping its patients to heal.
The principles learned here can be applied to any building type. And that is what I aim to teach you through this course.
By designing buildings that touch your occupants at all five levels of experience: physiologically, intellectually, emotionally, behaviorally, and even spiritually; you will learn to truly make a difference in your occupant’s life. Consequently, the body of work which makes up your portfolio will be like no other. And the methods you learn here will allow you to accomplish more with less — boosting your architectural expertise, and allowing you to skyrocket your projects, one after the other, all while designing work that truly matters to your occupants.
